Potassium participates in regulating the permeability of cell membranes, affecting the entry and exit of nutrients (such as amino acids and glucose) into and out of cells. It is an activator or cofactor of multiple enzyme systems and participates in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and energy.
